Whether you were watching the Super Bowl primarily for the game or for the commercials, most comics fans were eagerly awaiting another look at Avengers: Infinity War, and Marvel Studios didn’t disappoint. The new promo arrived a little late in the broadcast, bringing with it new footage of virtually every major player in the ensemble film, as well some massive set pieces. But perhaps the most revealing part element was the first official look at Captain America’s new Wakandan shield.
The accessory was revealed just last week with leaked photos of Hasbro’s Marvel Legends action figures, which featured Steve Rogers in his updated costume, accompanied by what appeared to be a shield of Wakandan design. It already been widely assumed Chris Evans’ character would have Black Panther to thank for his new shield, considering Chadwick Boseman’s line from the Infinity War teaser trailer: “Evacuate the city, engage all defenses, and get this man a shield.”
Now, thanks to the Super Bowl spot, all of that moves beyond speculation. The scene in the new TV spot is brief, but it shows Steve Rogers standing next to T’Challa, and activating his new vibranium shield. It also explains the “gauntlets” Rogers wears in the previous teaser, in that crowd-pleasing, slow-motion charge in which he leads the Avengers, and the Wakandan army, into battle.
Fans have wondered Roger would wield ever since he abandoned his iconic shield at the end of Captain America: Civil War. Now, we finally have an official answer. But will this new shield hold up as well as the original, or will Tony Stark have to return to him what is rightfully his?
